Creating Your Family Legacy Document

A family legacy document is a written record that clearly communicates a family’s accomplishments, beliefs, actions, and guidance that family members have demonstrated in their lives. These are elements of a family legacy that are the guideposts for current and future generations. It archives achievements and describes moments that revealed character and what is important.

Family members participating in the process will gather as much information as possible about themselves and their parents. Analyze the collected data to develop a mission statement. Use this mission statement to create the first draft of the Family Legacy Document.
Share the draft of the Family Legacy Document with the family for review and feedback.

Once the process has been completed, you will have a product that can be used to share your family’s documented legacy with your broader family, friends and loved ones.  This document will serve as a historical record for your family.  It will also serve as a foundation that will enable family members to dig deeper into family history to develop a richer view of the family’s legacy.  Continued refinement of the written family legacy document will help guide future generations.  An effective document will make the family’s vision clear to at least three generations.
